news briefing

Apple issued a press release on October 27 stating it will continue to work towards the goal of carbon neutrality by 2030. It also announced that approximately 60 manufacturers from its new supply chains have responded well to adopting 100% renewable energy.  Among these new companies, manufacturers like TPK-KY and Unimicron are from Taiwan. Currently, there are as many 175 companies that have responded to Apple's "Supplier Clean Energy Program", accounting for nearly 90% of its overall supply chain.

impact analysis

In April 2021, Apple released its "Apple Environmental Report 2021", planning to reduce its net carbon emissions to zero for all businesses, production supply chains, and product life cycles in the next 10 years. Additionally, every Apple device sold will achieve zero climate impact to realize carbon neutrality. For the time being, it is planned that carbon emissions will be reduced by 75% by 2030, with the remaining 25% offset by investments in natural environmental protection projects.

In this regard, as early as 2017, Apple had concluded mutual cooperation with Ibiden, a Japanese substrate manufacturer in assisting the company to use 100% renewable energy for its production. As such, Ibiden is considered as the first PCB manufacturer that announced the use of renewable energy within Apple's supply chain. In view of this, Ibiden has invested in the construction of more than 20 new renewable energy infrastructures with an installed capacity of more than 12MW with one of them being the largest floating solar panel system in Japan.
According to statistics from Taiwan’s current PCB output values, about 27.1% is related to Apple’s supply chain with Apple considered as the single largest customer overall in the industry. If Taiwan’s manufacturers fail to meet Apple’s net-zero policy requirements by 2030, all orders will end up being canceled. A worst-case scenario estimates that this will impact the output value of Taiwan's PCB industry by more than NT$100 billion. Therefore, it is critical that companies must review internal current conditions and needs as soon as possible, formulate industry consensus, seek official support, and promote relevant measures in response to international trends of environmental protection policy.
