News Briefing
  • MediaTek published its 6G Technology White Paper titled "MediaTek 6G Technology White Paper" with the theme of "Satellite and Terrestrial Network Convergence." The white paper focuses on the integration of 5G satellite and ground communication and explores areas where the existing 5G satellite communication technology can be further enhanced.

Impact Analysis
  • As a global leader in smartphone chipsets, MediaTek has shared the industry's vision and goals of integrating ground and satellite communication into 6G networks. In 2022, MediaTek released the "6G Vision Whitepaper," which outlined the company's vision for 6G technology. At that time, it was estimated that the standardization work for 6G would begin around 2024 or 2025, and commerciali operation 2029 or 2030. In other words, while the industry was still reaping the revenue growth from 5G, MediaTek had already begun positioning and strategizing for 6G.
  • The white paper not only explains the technical aspects of enabling simultaneous support for terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks on a single smartphone but also provides a brief overview of the applications linking automotive and IoT products with satellite networks. In other words, based on the scenarios outlined in this white paper, it can be inferred that in the future 6G era, in addition to smartphones, any terminal product may directly communicate with satellite networks. If this scenario becomes a reality, it would be a significant innovation for current terminal products.
  • Due to the complexity and diversity of 6G technology and communication formats, it is excepted to be a cutthroat competition. This can be seen from the release of related white papers by major chipset manufacturers, telecom operators, and national research institutions. Additionally, the United States, unwilling to repeat the scenario of lagging behind mainland China in 5G, may not allow a single dominant player in 6G. As a result, the development of two standards, as seen in the past with 3G and 4G, is a possibility for 6G communication systems.
  • Although the PCB industry in Taiwan may not have a say in choosing communication technologies, it is crucial to note that we have entered 2023, and the anticipated commercial transition is not as distant as imagined. It is recommended that the industry start paying attention to the development of relevant technologies and the convergence of industries in this field.
