News Briefing
  • Supported by the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has partnered with CPC Corporation to develop a "low-loss cyclic olefin resin synthesis technology." This innovation not only significantly enhances the electrical stability of substrate materials but also ensures higher stability and reliability during high-frequency signal transmission. The collaboration aims to strengthen Taiwan's self-sufficiency in advanced circuit board raw materials.
Impact analysis
  • COC (Cyclic Olefin Copolymer) is a material known for its low density, low moisture absorption, high transparency, heat resistance, hydrolytic stability, and excellent processability. By modifying its C5 derivatives through ring-opening polymerization, COC can be transformed into a low-dielectric polyolefin material. This can be combined with resin formulations for applications in high-frequency materials. Its characteristics include low dielectric constant and low loss, exhibiting outstanding electrical performance under high-frequency conditions. This positions it as a strong candidate to meet the demands of millimeter-wave era high-speed signal processing and large data transmission. In general, India, like other countries, has recognized the growing importance of semiconductors. Although India's supply chain lacks the completeness seen in countries like Japan and Malaysia, its strong development in downstream end-product assembly has become a key advantage in moving towards upstream components. With five investment projects approved in just over a year, India seems eager to catch up. At present, most of the approved projects are packaging and testing plants, which are closer to downstream operations.
  • Currently, commonly used high-frequency materials for PCB rigid boards include PPO and PTFE. The primary raw material suppliers for these are mainly foreign companies, such as SABIC, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, and Asahi Kasei for PPO, and Chemours, Daikin Industries, and 3M for PTFE. For COC, major suppliers include Zeon, JSR, and Polyplastics from Japan. In comparison, Taiwan still lacks self-sufficiency in the high-frequency material supply chain and remains heavily reliant on imports.
  • ITRI and CPC Corporation have jointly developed a low-loss cyclic olefin resin, successfully overcoming the technical limitations of traditional PCB materials. This achievement not only boosts Taiwan's self-reliance in advanced PCB raw materials but also fulfills domestic industry needs for local supply, enhancing Taiwan’s competitive edge in the high-frequency materials market.
