TSMC has planned to set up a 5nm wafer-fab in Arizona, USA, while the "Chemical Product Alliance" to the United States has also been teamed up. TSMC has hand-picked three companies including Kanto-PPC, Chang Chun Group, and Shiny Chemical to form the alliance in making up the USA team. First off, Kanto-PPC will take the initiative to lead the establishment of a chemical plant with an investment of US$50 million (about NT$1.5 billion) in the preliminary stages. Initially, it is set to manufacture advanced-process chemical products, and at a later stage it will supply goods to the nearby semiconductor manufacturers such as Intel.
Liu De-yin, chairman of TSMC, disclosed that TSMC will set up plants in the United States and alongside its supply-chain partners from Taiwan will also explore hand-in-hand the United States markets. TSMC has acquired a site for a new park located next to its US wafer-fab. That should offer some space for its supply-chain partners to take residence there. Aside from supplying products to TSMC, these Taiwanese manufacturing plants will also take this opportunity to advance into the United States markets.
According to revelations from trade sources, the establishment plant site for "Chemical Product Alliance" of TSMC is right next to its compound in the US, and is located in the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona. The plant is roughly a 30-minute drive away from urban Phoenix and only an hour drive from the Intel plant.
For TSMC to meet the requirements for plant establishment in the United States, relevant authorities are currently carrying out evaluation operations prior to the setting up of factories in the United States. It is expected that the entire investment case will be finalized before the end of this year. Most of all, these chemical plants have to be completed 6 months before TSMC settles with its equipment assembly in the US plant so as to facilitate the implementation of TSMC for product verification.
Though the chemical product alliance is reckoned as the "Taiwanese Team" by TSMC, the overall investment is led by Kanto-PPC. Only its related members have to be endorsed by TSMC. For the time being, members that have shown their willingness to join the bandwagon for U.S. investment include the well-known petrochemical giant, Chang Chun Group and Shiny Chemical, with many more manufacturers yet to be recruited. It is estimated that there will be in total, six manufacturers that will form up the "Taiwanese Chemical Product Alliance" in support of TSMC as they set up factories in the US.
Kanto-PPC was decorated with the honor of "Chemical Material Quality Cooperation Award" at TSMC Supply Chain Management Forum last year. Of its products, it mainly supplies TSMC with special electronic chemical products such as electronic-level hydrogen peroxide water, ammonia water, hydrofluoric acid, high-purity solvents, mixed-acid etching solution of photo-resist developers, and cleaning solutions amongst others.
