News briefing

To promote the country’s 5G industry development, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) assembled Chunghwa Telecom, ASE, and Qualcomm to build up the first exclusive global 5G mmWave smart factory enterprise network at the Nanzi manufacturing compound of ASE in Kaohsiung.

impact analysis
Although the mmWave enjoys the advantage of a high transmission rate, it is limited by its shortcomings of poor penetration, confining its applicable settings. Besides, since its cost is relatively high, its popularity is much lower than that of sub-6G, hence the worldwide proportion of 5G smartphone mmWave in 2020 should sit only between 10-20%, based on the integrated data from each of the surveying agencies. However, the Private 5G field services are usually carried out in a relatively small area when viewed from its characteristics. If signal transmission direction can be deftly arranged, it can then be utilized in those special settings where low latency and high bandwidth are needed, whereby the mmWave can also be employed to achieve the transmission objective from any dead angle.

The demo factory set up in this occasion has focused on three major applications, namely, “AI+AGV Smart Unmanned Vehicle,” “AR Remote Collaboration,” and “AR Experience Environment at Green Technology Education Center.” The realization of this concept has been faithfully implemented being reckoned to be of the most benchmarks. At present, the deployment of mmWave is mainly lingering on general scenarios, so that the growth of space for penetration rate can be limited to a certain extent. As for successful cases using enterprise networks such as Private 5G, those should help gear the industry to place even more resources onto the development of mmWave to enhance expansion speeds with related equipment so that opportunities for mmWave could sprout to ground on new application fields and break loose from the current settings of low penetration rates. Despite the initial developments of Sub-6G greatly benefiting Taiwan’s PCB industry, it should persistently bring further benefits in the next few years. Nonetheless, the suggestion is that the deliberation of resource allocation should be adjusted from the perspective of sustaining technological leadership, for the growth rate of mmWave may no longer be as slow as previously predicted.
