2021/01/27 News Briefing According to the Global 5G Development Report released in 2020, by GSA Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) CPE ranks in second place, as well as mobile phones, among terminal equipment products, that support 5G. Also, the pandemic has increased traffic growth within the communication industry, the most notable area of increase is that linked to home networks. Impact Analysis According to GSA statistics, the number of 5G commercial network operators has nearly doubled – presently there are 135 (in 58 countries), compared to 78 in February of 2020. It is important to take note that there are many types of terminal products that support 5G. There were as many as 559 types of 5G terminal products listed globally (Dec 2020). Within these products, 335 are ready for commercial shipment, an increase of 108%, compared with 161 products in March 2020. As noted from the data, it can also be seen that the development of 5G terminal products is growing rapidly, alongside infrastructure construction. It is interesting to note that while the smartphone ranks highest among the 559 5G terminal products released, the aggregate of non-mobile phone products has reached 50%. Compared to infrastructure, since the shipment of terminal products is of a relatively larger volume, the impact on Taiwan’s PCB output value or the number of manufacturers will be affected and change according to the market needs, and will change over time. If we view this from the initial drive/demand of products needed for the development of 5G in the first few years, fixed network equipment at home or in a small area (enterprise or factory) will be the fields of 5G application undergoing qualitative changes, alongside smartphones. This is another area of concern that deserves attention from the relevant manufacturers.
